The European Banking Federation (EBF) has released a report, 'Encouraging and Rewarding Sustainability: Accelerating sustainable finance in the banking sector', which examines a range of potential incentives that may be used to accelerate sustainable finance in the banking sector.

The report highlights, amongst other things, the importance of incentives as a policy catalyst for sustainable finance and examines a range of potential incentives, including:

  • a sustainable finance guarantee fund;
  • a green loan securitisation framework;
  • a sustainable finance supporting factor;
  • preferential treatment of collateral; and
  • carbon price and fiscal measures.

The report also includes a number of examples of existing national fiscal and financial incentives as well as proposals for tax incentives and subsidies for sustainable finance products.
