European Commission announces Green Deal Industrial Plan

On 1 February 2023, the European Commission (the Commission) released its Green Deal Industrial Plan (the Plan) as part of its strategy to ensure that the European Union becomes a competitive green technology leader and can meet its binding commitment to become net zero by 2050.

The Plan sets out the EU's strategy for the scaling up of  EU green technology manufacturing, and is intended to work alongside the Commission's overarching European Green Deal.

The Plan is based on four pillars, as follows:

• a predictable and simplified regulatory environment, including a proposal for an EU Net-Zero Industry Act;
• faster access to funding, including for clean tech production in Europe;
• enhancing skills, including through the establishment of Net-Zero Industry Academies; and
• open trade for resilient supply chains.
