WWF publishes paper on nature in transition plans

31 January 2023

On 31 January 2023, the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) published a paper looking at how and why companies should consider climate and nature together when they are drafting transition plans (the Paper).

The WWF notes that, whilst there has been increasing interest and activity in the drafting of transition plans across much of the real economy, a large majority of their focus has been on climate action and has undervalued the protection of the natural world.

To address this, the WWF has proposed that business leaders should take a more holistic approach and should consider decarbonisation strategies and the protection of nature as two interlocked crises. The Paper provides two steps for integrating nature positive objectives into transition planning:

  1. Integrate nature into climate transition planning – the first step requires business leaders to consider the impact of their transition plans on nature and ensure that any plans produced do not exacerbate nature loss.
  2. Integrate nature positive objectives into transition planning – the second step involves aligning to nature positive goals by integrating specific nature positive objectives into an organisation's entire business strategy and by formally aligning to international standards such as the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
