Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change publishes third part of its Sixth Assessment Report

04 April 2022

On 4 April 2022, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (the IPCC) published the third part of the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report, 'Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change report' (the Report).

The Report provides an updated global assessment of climate change mitigation progress and pledges, whilst examining the sources of global emissions. It also highlights the developments in emission reduction and mitigation efforts, assessing the impacts of national climate pledges relative to long-term goals. More specifically, the main points referred to in the Report are that:

  • all sectors have the potential to half emissions by 2030 and there are mitigation options which are accessible across all sectors (i.e. carbon dioxide removal techniques);
  • significant transitions must be made specifically in the energy sector to alleviate the rate of global warming, particularly through reducing fossil fuel use and improving energy efficiency; and
  • the coming years are imperative to limiting global warming to 1.5C as greenhouse gas emissions must peak by 2025 and be reduced by 43% by 2030.

Contributions to the Report were made by Working Group III which focuses on climate change mitigation, assessing methods for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, and which includes 278 authors from 65 countries.
