House of Lords committee publishes report on the challenges for nature-based solutions

On 27 January 2022, the Science and Technology Select Committee (the Committee) of the House of Lords published a report titled 'Nature-based solutions: rhetoric or reality?' (the Report). The report investigates the potential challenges and contributions of nature-based solutions to achieving net zero in the UK, including the Environmental Land Management scheme.

The committee concluded that without improvements made in policy clarity as well as investments in research and training, the government's ambitious plans may be unattainable. Recommendations from the committee in the report include:

• training and funding services for farmers and land managers; and
• the establishment of an overall land use strategy outlining how nature-based solutions will contribute to net zero.
