'Glasgow Climate Pact' signed by almost 200 countries

13 November 2021

On 13 November 2021, nearly 200 countries agreed the Glasgow Climate Pact (the GCP) which is intended to speed up the pace of climate action in an endeavour to keep the 1.5oC global warming target in reach.

All signatories to the GCP have agreed to to revisit and strengthen their current emissions targets to 2030, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), in 2022. This will be combined with a yearly political roundtable to consider a global progress report and a Leaders summit to be held in 2023.

Importantly, the GCP text provides only for the phasing down of unabated coal power. This was a last-minute edit to the earlier, stronger language which had provided for the phasing out of unabated coal power.
