COP 26 takes place in Glasgow

31 October 2021

On 31 October 2021, the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 26) began in Glasgow. The COP26 summit is intended to bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. A number of key announcements regarding climate change issues are expected to be released during COP26.

Announcements have been made already in areas such as deforestation, where world leaders have promised to put an end to and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030. The pledge involves around £14bn of public and private funding, and was committed to by 110 world leaders, representing 85% of the world's forests. It is hoped that this move will follow a different path to the deal struck in 2014 which failed to slow deforestation.
