UK launches inaugural Green Gilt, raising £10bn for green projects

21 September 2021

On 21 September 2021, the sale of the UK's first Green Gilt raised £10 billion. The Green Gilt is intended to direct funding towards net zero and green projects and is the largest inaugural green issuance by any sovereign.

This is the first of two UK Green Gilt issuances scheduled for this year, which are aiming to raise at least £15 billion collectively to finance the projects set out in the UK's Green Financing Framework. The list of projects to be financed includes clean transportation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, pollution prevention and control, living and natural resources, and climate change adaption.

The UK Government will report on the environmental impact and social benefits resulting from the funded green projects, such as job creation, affordable infrastructure and socioeconomic advancement.
