Sustainable finance: EU Parliament adopts Taxonomy Regulation

The EU Parliament has adopted at second reading a regulation on the establishment of a framework to facilitate sustainable investment, and amending Regulation (EU) 2019/2088 (the Taxonomy Regulation).

The Taxonomy Regulation, which is intended to provide businesses and investors with a common language to identify those economic activities that are considered environmentally sustainable, is based around the following six EU environmental objectives:

  • climate change mitigation and adaptation;
  • sustainable use and protection of water and marine resources;
  • transition to a circular economy, including waste prevention and increasing the uptake of secondary raw materials;
  • pollution prevention and control; and
  • protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems.
  • The Taxonomy Regulation will enter into force on the 20th day following its publication in the Official Journal.
