UN Principles for Responsible Investment publishes briefing paper on trends in ESG reporting requirements for investors

03 August 2022

On 3 August 2022, the UN Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) published a briefing paper (the Paper) on trends in ESG reporting requirements for investors, which is intended to aid market participants in navigating the ESG reporting requirements applicable to investments and investment processes across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.

The Paper identifies a number of specific drivers for ESG reporting initiatives, including: -

·         the relevance of ESG issues for investors;

·         regulation;

·         voluntary guidance and schemes; and

·         fund members/beneficiary demands.

The PRI's key findings set out in the Paper include the following:

·         investment-related ESG reporting requirements are growing, but not in all jurisdictions;

·         there has been a move from “tell me” to “show me” reporting;

·         ESG issue-specific reporting is growing; and

·         a global consensus on investment-related ESG reporting appears to be a long way off.

The PRI intends to deliver a universally applicable reporting framework that is better-aligned with jurisdictional reporting requirements and can evolve to meet the future needs of our signatories. They will also continue to monitor the reporting landscape for investors to inform the future development and implementation of their reporting framework.
