European Council agrees position on European green bonds

13 April 2022

On 13 April 2022, EU permanent representatives greenlighted the position of the European Council (the Council) on the proposed creation of 'European Green Bonds'.

The Council's proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on European green bonds (the Regulation) includes the establishment of uniform requirements for issuers of bonds seeking to use the 'European Green Bond' or 'EuGB' label when marketing sustainable bonds to investors in the EU. The Regulation would also provide for the creation of a registration system and supervisory framework for external reviewers of European Green Bonds. Now that it has reached its agreed position, the Council will look to begin negotiations with the European Parliament in order to agree a final version of the text for the Regulation.
