Developing markets: the impact of Covid 19 and other market trends

In the LMA's first ever podcast, Amelia Slocombe, Managing Director and Head of Legal, was joined by a panel of experts to discuss the impact of Covid-19 on emerging markets across EMEA, as well as other key trends and challenges. The panel was chaired by Tedd George, Founder & Chief Narrative Officer at Kleos Advisory, and included speakers from across the commercial banking, DFI and insurance industries.

Given the large number of speakers and the richness of the discussion, we have divided the podcast into two parts.

Part 1 COVID-19 and its impact on DM jurisdictions (released 28 April)

  • Where are the major problems and which countries and regions are managing better than others?
  • How is COVID-19 forcing people to change the way they do business and serve their clients?

Part 2 Debt, regulation, innovation and sustainable finance (released 30 April)

  • How will the current crisis impact debt levels and how will this be managed?
  • What should regulators be prioritising and how can we engage with them usefully?
  • How will the LIBOR transition impact developing markets?
  • What key innovations are you seeing in the loan markets?
  • How has the importance of green and sustainable financing grown in the COVID-19 crisis?

In the run-up to recording this podcast, we carried out a survey with our members to obtain their personal views on some of the key economic and investment challenges impacting developing market jurisdictions. The survey was divided into four sections: general questions pertinent to all developing market jurisdictions and then specific questions for Africa, followed by specific questions for CEE countries (including Russia and Turkey) and lastly, the Middle East. The results were collected anonymously and are summarised below. On 30 April, we will release a short podcast which will discuss the results in more detail.
