Sub-Saharan Africa Syndicated Loans Conference
Hilton Hotel, 138 Rivonia Rd, Sandton
We are holding our sixth annual conference in Johannesburg on 3 July 2019. This event will cover the syndicated loan markets not only in South Africa but also the wider Sub-Saharan Africa region.
It is aimed at all professionals operating in the syndicated loan markets in Sub-Saharan Africa. As usual, the programme will feature senior loan market practitioners from local and pan-African commercial banks and DFIs, as well as non-banks, professional advisors and law firms active in the region.
Despite recent market and economic volatility, the Sub-Saharan Africa region continues to offer attractive investment opportunities. We are pleased to have an exceptional and diverse range of speakers join us in discussing current trends and challenges to be considered when lending into the region, with a view to identifying potential solutions to challenges and opportunities for growth.

Chair: Amelia Slocombe, Managing Director and Head of Legal - LMA
The key to developing a liquid loan market in Africa: a roundtable debateSome of the questions panellists will tackle addressing this topic include:
- How do we make the market more accessible to alternative, non-bank lenders?
- Could the development of a liquid, efficient secondary market be the key to increased lending activity on the continent? If so, how do we develop such a market in Africa?
- Does a secondary market of sorts already exist in a private context? If so, who is buying the debt?
- How do we approach restructuring, workouts and distressed investments: what lessons can we learn from historical successes and failures?
- How do we make the market more accessible to new entrants?
- How important are efficient back office and agency systems to this process, particularly for large syndicated deals?
- How might technology and Fintech assist?
