Japan's Ministry of the Environment releases guidelines relating to green loans and sustainability linked loans

The Green Bond Guidelines (the "2017 Guidelines") were released in 2017 by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan ("MOEJ") with the objective of increasing the awareness of green bonds and expanding green bond issuance and investment within Japan.

The MOEJ has now updated the 2017 Guidelines and expanded them to cover green loans and sustainability linked loans (the "2020 Guidelines"). The 2020 Guidelines aim, amongst other things, to increase the utilisation of green and sustainability linked loans in the Japanese market and to protect against the risk of greenwashing in the market.
